New Zealand Trials Report

2nd – 10th April 2010

Arriving in New Zealand was eventful, having been fined $200 by Customs for erroneously forgetting to declare my hiking boots. This prompted me to declare everything, including the ‘kitchen sink’ on my return to Australia. A good lesson learned.

Robyn Gaskin was kind enough to pick me up from the motel in Auckland and we travelled north to the trial site on the Thursday. The trip took most of the day with a few stops intermingled, arriving at the accommodation, Hukatere Lodge at around 4:30pm. I must say the accommodation was superb for not only a place to be based for the trials, but also for exercising the competitors’ dogs and, on one day, holding a trial.

In all I was scheduled to judge five trials over the coming days but this eventually grew to six as a result of a number of competitors withdrawing from a trial that then required re-arranging of the planned judges.

On the first day of the trial schedule I was given the opportunity to walk with the Judges to ensure I was well versed in NZ dog trial protocols. I was fortunate to have this preference, as from the gallery the dog work was difficult to see given that the trial was being held in forest “cut-over”. Apart from the co-judging aspect of the New Zealand trials, all other facets were similar to Australian trailing rules.

I was warned that the Northland had been in a drought and the impact on the abundance of game was unknown. This proved to be true, as a number of trials produced “no results” due to lack of game.

Rather than provide a report on all the trials that did not have a result, I have decided to focus on the trials that did have an outcome. However, I must say that I was impressed with all aspects of dog work and the handler’s talents in adverse conditions in the trails that did not have results. I am sure that if there had been greater bird numbers and the conditions cooler, then a result would have been achievable in all the trials, such was the high standard of the dogs.

On Sunday, 4th April, I judged the Pointer and Setter Championship Trial where my co-judge was Linda Beck. The conditions were good and we saw some excellent running dogs but with no birds being produced from the early braces, things were not looking promising for a result. This all changed with a superb point by Tony Conner’s Pointer Arddun Dasmask (Tui). Unfortunately the pheasant flushed in front of the other handler, even so Tui was steady to the flush and shot. We brought back two brace for the second round, being Robyn Gaskin’s Gamemaster Tanner, Ian Hendren’s English Setter Berryfield Jean, Tony’s Pointer Tui and Robyn’s Irish Setter Lusca Skippy. Sadly, the birds deserted us, with the only find of the day, a pheasant, going to Tony’s Pointer Tui. The retrieve was successfully completed and it was with great pleasure that we awarded Tui first place.

As mentioned, a number of trials went by with no results until the Working Spaniel Gundog Club Pointer & Setter Championship. This day my co-judge was Frances Conner. After much reflection, we decided the likely place to find birds was the forest “cut-over” and although this area had been used a few times for previous trials, the greatest number of birds had been seen in this location. We had three and a half brace for the first round and immediately birds were seen, nevertheless misdemeanours by some dogs made our decisions easier. At the end of the first round only three dogs were brought back to the second round. Tony Conner’s Pointer Arddun Dasmask (Tui) was the only dog that had a find and been shot over which resulted in an excellent point by Tui and the production of small covey of Californian quail.

The second round saw Ian Hendren’s English Setter Berryfield Jean braced with Robyn Gaskin’s Gamemaster Tanner. With a few birds being seen earlier, we believed there was an opportunity to have an exciting finish to the trial. Similarly, both dogs ran well but unfortunately there was no game found. This left Tony’s Tui as the only dog to have a find, and on completion of the successful retrieve was awarded first place. During the first round of this trial a pheasant and some twenty quail were seen but warmer conditions at the start of the second round seemed to result in scarce game.

I would like to thank everyone for their warm welcome and hospitality. I really enjoyed the fishing even though a few competitors tried to “drown” the judge one day. To all my co-judges, thank you for your help. Everyone’s company was wonderful and I have made some great new friends, the accommodation was excellent, and meals fantastic (somehow I managed to loose weight). Foremost, I was really impressed with standard of dog work and handling; and wish everyone all the best in the future with their dogs.
